Distraction while driving is a major reason for traffic accidents. The NHTSA estimates that distracted driving is responsible for 13% of all fatal motor vehicles. One simple text message can distract the driver up to 20 seconds, in this time the driver is not possible to react in time if unexpected situations appear. A primary component of distracted driving is the diversion of attention away from the primary task of driving. Looking at the phone is not the only distraction while driving. Speaking to passengers, searching for the right radio channel, eat or situations outside the car can distract the driver and cause accidents.
To prevent distracted driving car manufactures, implement various technologies, which should help the driver focussing on the street. On the one hand these technologies can prevent distracted driving with information and automatization, but on the other hand to much information for the driver can distract him.
For example, modern cars often use head-up displays, which visualize driving information in the field of view of the driver. This prevents him from looking down. However, this head-up displays can also cause distracted driving by showing to much information like speed, dead angle warning, traffic signs navigations and many more at the same time. An effective technology avoiding distracted driving are eye tracing technologies, which control the drivers eye activity and where they are looking to. If the technology registers that the driver is distracted by looking on other things, the car gives the driver a warning and a reminder to focus on the road.
To prevent distracted driving, focus on driving and just look at the street.
